Here are top five classic military movies everyone must watch even if they were born several decades after these movies were made! Stanley Kubrick directed ‘Full Metal Jacket’, (1987), with Matthew Modine in the lead. The movie has a lot of violence in the second half. The first half focuses on marines preparing to go to Vietnam. ‘A Bridge Too Far’, (1977), saw awesome performances by Michael Caine, James Caan, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Gene Hackman, and Robert Redford. It is about how the Allies failed to get through to the Nazis from the Netherlands during the second World War.

Then, there is ‘The Dirty Dozen’, (1967), which is the story of 12 prisoners who are to be executed. They are offered the option to go on a covert mission against the Germans. ‘The Great Escape’, (1963), and ‘Top Gun’, (1986), became cult military movies. The first one starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, and James Garner, is about an escape from a PoW prison, while the second one is about navy aviators with Tom Cruise in the lead.

There are hundreds of games based on the military available for the personal computer. However, here is a short list off the best ones:

With its amazing graphics and options for up to 64 players taking part as two teams, Battlefield 2 seems to be the all-time top military game available. The theme of the game is based upon capturing enemy bases in a huge battlefield. Call of Duty 2 is a shooting game with scope for lots of tactics. It wows with its battle episodes and fantastic graphics. Player are allowed to choose different avatars as they go into battle. Silent Hunter III is another military game set during the era of the second World War. The gamer has to handle a U-Board in the Atlantic Ocean. Civilization IV is another very popular military game that is all strategy with even a religious twist in its latest installment.

Military games have an educational value as well apart from the entertainment they provide. Children pick up essential strategy, hand-eye co-ordination, and motor skills while playing these games.

The songs and marches of the US Military Services have become classics loved by all. The song of the United States Air Force is ‘Wild blue yonder’. The Liberty Magazine ran a contest in 1938 for a musical composition for the US Air Force. Robert Crawford won the contest and made his first public appearance with the spirited song at the Cleveland Air Races in 1939. The Marine Corps adopted the hymn ‘From the Halls of Montezuma’. The first verse of the hymn was written by an anonymous Marine. The song was officially composed in 1880. The United States Army song ‘The Army goes rolling along’ traces its roots to the shouts of a section chief calling out to drivers to ‘Keep them rolling!”

The United States Navy song is ‘Anchors Aweigh’. The song was composed by Lt Charles A. Zimmermann USN. A story goes that Charles was the youngest ever to take control of the Navy band. Supposedly, Midshipman First Class Alfred H. Miles wrote the title of the song and its first two stanzas. One more US military song needs to be mentioned. It is ‘Semper Paratus’ (Always Ready) of the United States Coast Guard. Captain Francis Saltus Van Boskerck, USCG, is said to have written and composed this military song.

Here is a post by Leah Markham, an Army veteran and an Army wife:

As a Army veteran and an Army wife I really look forward to watching The Unit. This shows allows others to see what military life is really like. The sacafices we deal with on a daily basis. Not all people know what it is like to have a spouse gone for months at a time and sometimes not know where they are, or how to contact them. Watching The Unit and seeing other spouses go through the same things myself and others are dealing with in reassuring that we are not the only ones out there. My husband a 20 year Army solider looked forwarded to watchint The Unit every Saturday night (we are stationed in Japan and that is when AFN airs it) we would gather by the TV and watch faithfully. I was so upset when I heard The Unit had been cancelled. I remember when The Unit first aired we had just gotten home from our second deployment to Iraq and I was about to be discharged from the Army. I loved the show from the first episode. Please bring it back. At least give us a proper ending. You are leaving us out in the cold. Bring back The Unit.

“It may not be called a Unit movie, but I’ve partnered the author of Inside Delta Force and the series’ consultant, Command Sergeant Major retired Eric L. Haney. I just bought the rights to his books, and we’re going to make movies out of those,” Dennis reveals to the TV DivaGal exclusively.

Clearly Dennis is disappointed that CBS cancelled the show and The Unit obviously means more to him than just a job. Help get The Unit back, whether it be on TV or on the big screen!
