The Unit may have been cancelled, but the producers had already planned out what was going to happen in season 5.
Shawn Ryan shared the plan with ‘The Futon Critic’. Ryan says, “It was going to be a whole new show in the sense that we were going to be training some young people, Bob was going to be training some people for a whole new organization. Jonas was finally going to be seeing his run end. The final season was going to be, I figured the fifth season was going to be the last… It was going to be a long, sort of final mission for Jonas. He’s not medically cleared, Mac has to go in and sort of change the medical records so that Jonas can keep on going on missions. We had a whole thing planned, it was going to be good.”
Ryan finishes by saying that if ‘The Unit’ had been owned by Paramount instead of Paramount, they would be filming season 5.

Hi, I am a 55 year old grandmother, RN and former military wife. I began watching this show in the middle of the 3rd season which I found while channelsurfing in the family room to get away from endless COPS and wrestling that was going on in the livingroom. From the getgo I found this program grabbed my interest. Not only did it feel familiar, watching the families as they go through the deployments, but it was also educational to me. I knew there were “special forces in all branches of the service, but seeing the guys in The Unit actually doing what they do helps me sleep better at night as an American. The story lines were great, thought provoking and action filled. Certainly better than ANY reality TV program can offer. The cast portrayed the characters in a manner that showed how much they cared about this show. Tt was refreshing to see characters with ethics and values, instead of some of society’s riff raff for once. I work in an office of approx 130 nurses and when telling about ourselves at a team meeting, I outed myself as a fanatic of this show and was floored to see how many people of my generation, men AND women are devotees to The Unit! Please consider putting it back on the air at least to give us the finale the producers had planned. Too many loose ends were left. Thank you, Laurie Bedillion
As always, your post is insightful plus delightfully written
I am disapointed that there was a planned end in season 5.
With good writing and guidance this show has a lot of life.
